Luke’s story of Jesus’ birth tells us that when the angels visited the shepherds on the hills outside of Bethlehem, the angel of the Lord appeared to them and said “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people. Today in the town of David a saviour has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord.” These words are reflected in that wonderful Christmas Carol, Joy to the World written by the great hymn writer and minister, Isaac Watts,
“Joy to the World, the Lord is come!
Let earth receive her king
Let every heart prepare him room”
The message of good news which brings joy is at the heart of the Christmas message. Joy which comes through Jesus. Joy which comes through embracing and receiving Jesus as our saviour, the Lord of our lives. Joy which comes through knowing Jesus and having a relationship with him. Joy which transcends circumstances, troubles and trials.
As we celebrate Christmas this year may each one of us know the joy of Christmas in each of our services.
May we enter into that joy as we sing and remember the Christmas story. May each one of us know joy as we respond to Isaac Watts’ challenge ‘Let every heart prepare him room’. May each one of us make room in our hearts for Jesus this Christmas and know the true and lasting joy that only comes through a relationship with him.
With our love and prayers for a wonderful and blessed Christmas for all of us,
